FAQ

WILL OUR MARRIAGE BE LEGAL?

Yes, all our ministers are authorized by the Government of Quebec to officialize your marriage. The day of the wedding, we will supply you with a copy of the declaration of marriage (DEC-50), the original of which we will send promptly to the Director of the État civil du Québec. You will then order a copy of your marriage certificate in the same fashion as you order a birth or a death certificate.

CAN FSEV MARRY US ANYWHERE IN QUEBEC?

Absolutely. We have over 50 ministers throughout the province. We will celebrate your union wherever you wish us to do so.

IF WE ARE RESIDENTS OF ANOTHER CANADIAN PROVINCE OR FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTRY, CAN FSEV MARRY US IN QUEBEC?

Yes. You will be married in accordance with the Quebec Civil Code. However, you should verify with a legally competent party in your province or country to see how this applies in your home country or province.

CAN FSEV MARRY US OUTSIDE THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC?

No. FSEV ministers can only exercise their ministry in this province.

WE ARE DIVORCED. CAN WE REMARRY WITH FSEV?

Yes. We respect the choices you make in your life project. All you need is to supply us with a copy of the decree testifying that you are free from any previous matrimonial bond.

DO WE HAVE TO TAKE MARRIAGE PREPARATION COURSES?

No. FSEV does not offer nor require these courses.

WHAT DELAY SHOULD WE RESPECT BEFORE WE CAN MARRY?

Legally, a 20-day publication is mandatory prior to a wedding.

WE ARE FROM DIFFERENT RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS. CAN FSEV MARRY US ANYWAY?

Of course. We will gladly marry couples from different religions. We do celebrate Love, and Love unites the hearts of everyone; it is not subject to constraints. The universal spirit of all life benefits from our complementary or different cultures.

DO WE HAVE TO GET MARRIED ON A SATURDAY?

Not at all. More and more couples choose another day to get married. We are available 365 days a year.

CAN MORE THAN ONE COUPLE MARRY AT THE SAME TIME?

Yes, as long as each couple agrees on the type of ceremony to be performed.

WHAT IS AN OFFICIANT?

The officiant presides over a wedding or a civil union and acts as an officer for civil registration, responsible for receiving the free and informed consent of the spouses or common-law partners to be. He insures that all the formalities prescribed by the law are observed.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FSEV OFFICIANT AND A ONE DAY OFFICIANT?

The FSEV officiant is a person that has a thorough knowledge of the various rituals relating to marriage. He is qualified to give his advice to the couple in order to prevent possible errors during the ceremony. He is a resourceful trustworthy person who insures the success of this very important day for you. He takes care of all the legal aspects. Holder of a long term permit, he is able to insure his own replacement in order for the wedding to take place on the same day in case of an unexpected event (accident or sickness).

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE ONE DAY OFFICIANT CANNOT PERFORM THE WEDDING DUE TO SICKNESS OR AN UNEXPECTED EVENT?

You cannot get married, and your wedding cannot be deferred as the one day officiant’s authorisation is only valid for him and for the date stated on the authorisation.

The Quebec Civil Code has current legal provisions to protect spouses. However, if you are considering specific needs or have particular exclusions that need to be addressed by a notary, your FSEV minister will put you in touch with a notary in your area.
